A Messenger From the Dawn of the Solar System

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon)is a relic of the Solar System's formation, preserving material that has remained largely unchanged since the planets themselves were taking shape. Locked in deep freeze for billions of years, comets like Lemmon spend most of their existence in the distant outskirts of the Solar System before gravity occasionally sends them on a brief journey toward the Sun.

As solar radiation warms the comet's nucleus, ancient ices sublimate directly into space, carrying dust away from the surface and creating the spectacular coma and tail that define these celestial visitors. The broad, gently curving dust tail traces the comet's orbital path, while the fainter ion tail is sculpted by the ever-changing solar wind, pointing almost directly away from the Sun regardless of the comet's direction of travel.

Though destined to fade back into darkness, every apparition offers a rare opportunity to witness some of the oldest surviving building blocks of our planetary system. Each photon reflected from this ancient traveler began as sunlight, carrying with it a glimpse into a time when the Solar System was still young and the worlds we know today had yet to fully form.
